Beautiful weekend weather here in Eau Claire as long as you were not up too early. Sub-zero temperatures this morning have given way to almost 20 degrees F at 11:00 am CST.
Got to witness a weather phenomenon known as an thermal inversion this morning which Dr. Hupy had pointed out to us the other morning during class. As a general rule the temperature drops the higher you go in the atmosphere. During very cold temperatures the air is very dense and stays very close to the ground while the long wave radiation heats up the air above the dense cold air mass. The temperature inversion was noticed when I was looking at the smoke coming out of my neighbors wood stove. Under normal conditions (no temperature inversion) the smoke would rise straight out of the stove and drift with the wind. Today the smoke went up a short ways and then was stalled and moved by the wind at a constant level (Figure 1).

My forecast from Friday was spot on again....nice when the weather doesn't change much in 2 weeks time.
My forecast for Monday is for a very similar day to today (Sunday) with temperatures in the mid-teens for a high. No precipitation and a continuation of the clear skies.
A little weather blip I came across today on my Instagram feed was a blizzard warning and almost full road closure across the entire continent of Iceland (Figure 2). A strong area of low pressure has surrounded the entire island and is causing strong winds and snow to fall. Have a great Sunday!
